A Student’s Story

“I started Mentors Care as a sophomore. I was having a rough year. I grew up in lots of different foster homes (mostly bad) and was adopted when I was 8 by a good family. I finally had a stable life, but then my new mom was diagnosed with cancer. I watched her fight cancer and eventually pass away my sophomore year. My grades started falling, I was struggling with my mental health. I had no motivation for high school or anything else.

My teachers connected me with Mentors Care program, thinking it would help me. I wasn’t very sure about it because I didn’t have trust in a lot of things. I was a little bit nervous, but started meeting with my mentor anyway. This helped me get the guidance I needed. It helped me connect with other people and build good relationships. Now, I try to encourage other people the way I was encouraged.

Mentors Care connected me with outside counseling and my awesome mentor. This is my third year in the program and my life is completely different. I was so broken, but not anymore. I am working towards being a social worker to help kids like me.

Mentors care is my safe place, a guide, and check- in, and something to look forward to day by day and week by week.”
